GRESHAM, Ore. – Four Rogue Community College (RCC) distance runners battled the unseasonably high heat as they closed out the track season at the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) Championships over the weekend at Mt. Hood Community College. Mallory Ward earned sixth place in the 10,000-meter with a time of 43:18.49, while Allex Bachtell finished with a time of 47:31.79. On the men’s side, the sophomore duo of Devin Rodman (36:45.49) and Nigel Leonis (37:11.22) finished in the top ten of the 10,000-meter.
“They fought hard and managed the heat as best they could. We unfortunately had a really long and wet spring. It's hard to simulate the kind of temperatures they had to endure,” said head coach Cole Watson about the heat wave the Portland area encountered. “The silver lining of this experience is that they're going to be able to pull from this one in their future running careers. They all have so much more to give to the sport. I'm really excited to see what they do going forward.” The 2016-2017 season was the inaugural year of the distance track program at RCC.
Several Ospreys will be leaving the nest as this season winds up. Nigel Leonis will be working toward a walk-on position with the Portland State roster, while Allex Bachtell wishes to join Western Oregon University’s program, and Mallory Ward is going to run for Oregon Institute of Technology. Coach Watson will be pursuing a sponsored running opportunity with Hoka One One Shoe Company and leaving his coaching position in June.
