MEDFORD -- The Rogue Community College Ospreys men’s soccer team celebrated two milestones last week. On Friday, Oct. 6., freshman defender Mauricio Sanchez was named the Under Armour Men's Soccer Player of the Week in the Northwest Athletic Conference. Also on Friday, the Ospreys men were ranked seventh in the NWAC coaches poll, the first official ranking in the team’s history.
Mauricio Sanchez (Piedmont Hills H.S., San Jose, Calif.) played a significant role in a 2-0 win over Clark on Sept. 30 and a 2-1 win over SWOCC on Oct. 4. Sanchez was responsible for several important blocked shots, tackles, and clearances in both wins. He added a goal from a corner kick against SWOCC which proved to be the game winner.
"Mauricio is very dynamic and athletic defender," said RCC head coach Greg Millick. “His size and length make it very difficult to go past him. He is also extremely athletic in his pace and jumping ability. Mauricio is an embodiment of our core values here at Rogue. He strives for excellence in everything he does." Sanchez is a part of a defensive unit that has allowed only three goals this season. The backline and keepers have immense pride in not allowing goals and keeping clean sheets.
The Ospreys also received their first-ever ranking in the team's three-year history, being placed seventh overall in the NWAC coaches poll. With a record of 5-0 and maintaining first place in the South Division, the Ospreys have earned their first official ranking as they move into the back half of the season. “It is hard work paying off," said Athletic Director Darren Van Lehn. “They have been putting in the time on the field and in the classroom every day for over two months. Staying consistent, working together and always striving for excellence, they are starting to see the results of their effort. I am excited to see what heights they can reach in the remainder of the season.”
The Ospreys (6-1-0, 5-0-0 NWAC) travel to Hillsboro on Sunday to take on Portland Community College (5-1-1, 3-0-1) at 2 p.m.
