Undefeated Ospreys battle to a 3-3 tie on the road

HILLSBORO –- The Rogue Community College Ospreys battled to a 3-3 draw against the Portland Community College Panthers on the road Sunday, Oct. 8, at Ron Tonkin Stadium. The Ospreys earned a critical point on the road, remaining undefeated and in first place in the NWAC South Division.

The Ospreys (6-1-1, 5-0-1 NWAC) knew they had to start fast against the second-place Panthers (5-1-2, 3-0-2) in their first matchup of the season. Early in the match Alejandro Velazquez drove up the midfield and played the ball into the middle of the box to Jose Gallegos who touched it off his chest into a shot that went past the diving goalkeeper into the net in the 8th minute. Back and forth it went until the 35th minute when Portland pushed the ball downfield and over the top of a diving Alex Thornhill who was making his first start of the season in place of the injured Darrin DeGroot. In the 41st minute the Ospreys struck again as Ramiro Alvarado Suarez drove down the right side and crossed the ball into the middle to Stenley Graham who drove home a goal. The Ospreys would go into the half up 2-1.

Coming out in the second half the back and forth play continued as Portland pressured when Mauricio Sanchez went to clear the ball from the box which struck a Portland player in the back and bounced back over the head of Thornhill who couldn’t tip it high enough, goal in the 52nd minute for Portland. With the match 2-2, the Ospreys once again went on the offensive attack when in the 66th minute Graham took a pass from Abraham Sigala and drove to the goal only to bounce it off the goalkeeper back to Sigala who drove it into the net to go up 3-2. The Ospreys battled to hold onto the lead when in the 85th minute a Portland forward broke free and managed to chip it over the head of a charging Thornhill to find the goal and tie it 3-3. The match would end in a 3-3 tie with the Ospreys collecting the vital point on the road.
