Ospreys Soccer Teams Battle Hard at Clark College but Come Up Short Against the Penguins in Midweek Contest

RCC Hosts Final Home Games of the Regular Season Saturday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Community Park in Medford

On October 19, the Rogue Community College (RCC) Ospreys' women’s soccer team (4-4-1) (4-6-1) dropped a close game 2-0 to the undefeated Clark College Penguins (10-0-0) (13-2-0) Wednesday afternoon in Vancouver. The Ospreys defense kept the Penguins scoreless in the first half. A crossed pass in front of the goal touched off of a Rogue player and rolled through the goal posts as an “own goal” gave Clark their first point of the game in the second half. A free kick on a foul sealed the 2-0 shutout for Clark in the 76th minute. Rogue showed resiliency as they played a tough match against the No. 1 ranked team in the South Division. They also denied one of the NWAC’s leading scorers, Molly Joyce, any goals. Osprey goalie Alcyea Jones earned 13 saves in goal for the day. Two yellow cards were issued during play: Samantha Lilley (RCC), and Marisol Espinoza (RCC).

Head coach Rusty Veth was excited to see his team fair so well against such a dominant group of players. "I am so incredibly proud of this squad. We tend to travel pretty well and today was no exception even if the score line doesn't show that.‎ We played some amazing team defense and our attack was on but we missed the final pass to be able to convert,” said coach Veth. “This beautiful game can break you down sometimes, the ball doesn't always bounce your way, but we are a family and there isn't any obstacle we can't overcome together. The pressure to score was released when the OG [own goal] happened but I loved the way we responded as a team. We are finding form and looking to make a playoff push still."

The Ospreys are still sitting third in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) Southern Division standings right behind Clark College and Lane Community College, and looking for a playoff berth in just their second season of competition in the NWAC. The women's Ospreys will play their last regular season home game Saturday, October 22 against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) (4-5-0) (5-8-0) at the U.S. Cellular  Community Park in Medford at 1 p.m.

Men’s Soccer

The RCC (4-7-1) (6-8-1) Men’s Soccer team was defeated 9-2 by a very physical Clark College (8-3-1) (8-6-2) squad Wednesday afternoon in Vancouver. The Penguins put up 7 goals in the first half and Kallen Rechberg scored in the 23rd minute to put the Ospreys on the board before half time. Brandon Sauceda added his 15th goal of the season as he scored in the 55th minute. Goal Keeper Derian Saldana recorded nine saves. Five yellow cards were issued in the highly physical match: Edgar Resendiz (RCC), Jorge Pinon (RCC), Sebastian Tovar (RCC), Travis Cave (RCC), and Derian Saldana (RCC).

The men's Ospreys host SWCC (0-11-0) (0-14-1) Saturday, October 22 at 3 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular  Community Park.
