Ospreys Open Season with Back-to-Back Losses

Eugene – The Rogue Community College (RCC) Ospreys women’s and men’s soccer programs opened regular season play in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) on the road Saturday, September 8. Both teams took on the Lane Community College Titans in back-to-back games. The Ospreys women were up first and held strong early but ultimately lost 2-0. The Ospreys men battled back and forth but dropped the match 3-1.

Ospreys Women

The Ospreys (1-2-0, 0-1-0 NWAC) opened the season against the Lane Titans (5-0-1, 1-0-0) and spent the first half locked in a defensive battle across the centerline entering the half even at 0-0. The second half started off as the first had ended, but in the 64th minute Brittany Smith assisted Danielle VanOrd to put Lane up 1-0. Only 6 minutes later the Titans would get on the board again as the Ospreys keeper Megan Cowee deflected a shot that was gathered up by Bailey Johnson and put into the back of the net to put Lane up 2-0 in the 70th minute. The match ended 2-0.

The Ospreys women play next in their home opener as they host Southwestern Community College (0-2-1, 0-1-0 NWAC) on Wednesday, September 12 at 1:30 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Community Park, Field 14 in Medford.

Ospreys Men

The Ospreys (1-2-1, 0-1-0 NWAC) men followed the women against the Lane Titans (4-2-0, 1-0-0). The game opened with quick scoring on both sides as Cian Cronin had a free kick just outside the top of the box in the 4th minute and curled it off the left post to bounce in putting Lane up 1-0. Only 5 minutes later Abraham Sigala took the ball down the right side after a pass from Elijah Akala and crossed it to find Sam Bradfield for a header that equalized the score in the 9th minute. Late in the first half Lane applied pressure and Santos Martinez found Issac Reyna who snuck it inside the net to put Lane up 2-1 at the half.

Both sides increased the pressure in the second half, trading fouls and combining for 9 corner kicks and 12 shots on goal. But it was Lane that found the back of the net as they countered off a free kick from Rogue in the 71st minute and Jesus Velazco found Santos Martinez to put Lane up 3-1 for good.

There were three yellow cards issued during the match: Angel Sonato (RCC) 35th, Jacob McDonald (LCC) 68th, and Mauricio Sanchez (RCC) 72nd.

The Ospreys men also have their home opener as their next match. They take on Chemeketa Community College (5-1-0, 1-0-0) on Saturday, September 15 at noon at U.S. Cellular Community Park, Field 14 in Medford.
