Ospreys Stumble on the Road

MEDFORD – The Rogue Community College (RCC) Ospreys were at different destination but both on the road Saturday October 6th. The Ospreys men were playing Chemeketa Community College (CCC) in Salem, OR and the women were in Coos Bay taking on Southwestern Community College (SWOCC). The Ospreys men challenged Chemeketa deep into the match but gave up two goals late to lose 3-0. The women played Southwestern to a draw at the half but gave up a own goal late in the match to fall 2-0.

Osprey Men:
The Ospreys (0-8-1, 0-7-0 NWAC) were playing at Blanchet High School against the number one ranked CCC (10-1-1, 6-0-1). The match started out with high energy with both teams pushing hard and attacking the goal. In the 32nd minute Sebastian Ruelas crossed the ball and found Abner Carillo on the back post to put CCC up 1-0. The teams would trade shots and sides of the field and go into the half with the 1-0 score.

The half started quick with both teams fighting hard and testing the defenses. A controversial yellow early on against the Ospreys set the tone for the officials for the second. Late in the match the Ospreys committed everything to the attack looking for the equalizer which allowed CCC to take advantage and score two quick counter attack goals. The first came in the 82nd minute and the second in the 86th minute both were by Mycol Diaz with the second being assisted by Ruelas. The match would end with a 3-0 loss.

There were six yellow cards issued during the match: Ryan Connop (RCC – 30th), Carlos Cordoba (RCC – 47th), Jose Vazquez (59th – CCC), Mauricio Sanchez (RCC – 73rd), Jonathan Medal (CCC – 89th), and Jorge Garcia (CCC – 90th).

The Osprey men are at home in their next match Saturday October 13th against Clark College (1-7-1, 1-5-0) in the second part of back-to-back games at the RCC Ospreys Soccer Expo event.

Osprey Women:
The Ospreys (4-6-1, 3-4-1 NWAC) were taking on SWOCC (2-6-2, 2-5-1) looking to stay close in the fight for the playoffs. Both teams had opportunities in the first half as they combined for 12 shots but neither could find the next. Starting keeper for the Ospreys, Mikayla Mache, collected 5 saves. The two sides would go into the half with the score 0-0.

The second half produced more of the first but SWOCC was able to take the advantage as Paige Boyce played a through ball past the back line and found Alana Smith who put it into the net in the 60th minute to go up 1-0. In the 74th minute Tabitha Martinez played a corner kick into the box which was struck by Alana Smith and then off an attempted header from the defense which bounced in for an own goal. Second half keeper Megan Cowee had two saves with the two goals allowed. The match would end with a 2-0 loss.

The Ospreys women are at home in their next match Saturday October 13th against Clark College (8-1-1, 7-0-1) in the first part of back-to-back games at the RCC Ospreys Soccer Expo. The Ospreys women currently sit in 4th place in the South Region of NWAC play.
