The Rogue Community College Ospreys women's volleyball team launches its inaugural season this weekend at the NWAC Fall Festival in Springfield. With just a day to recover, the team will followup its six-match tourney schedule with RCC's first-ever home volleyball match Tuesday in Medford.
The team's home opener is a non-conference match against Eugene's New Hope Christian College. Game time is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Court House, 709 N. Phoenix Road in Medford.
The team's roster includes two sophomores and 12 freshmen. In addition to five local players, head coach Christine Nelson recruited six players from Hawaii, two from Alaska and one from Idaho.
"Christine has built a strong first-year team with a mix of local and out-of-town athletes. Even with getting in late on the local recruiting cycle, she managed to find five players from the valley — all players that we expect to contribute right away," said RCC Athletic Director Darren Van Lehn.
"All are longtime volleyball players who are excited to be a part of Rogue history and setting the bar for Ospreys Volleyball going forward," Van Lehn said. "This team will be one of the more important in Rogue’s history as it establishes the beginning of growth for Ospreys Athletics."
RCC launched Ospreys Athletics in 2015. Volleyball is the third sport in the department's repertoire, which includes men's and women's soccer. A cross-country program was discontinued in 2018 due to low participation.
