Men’s Soccer Dominates in 5-1 Win; Volleyball Falls 3-0

GRANTS PASS – The Rogue Community College Ospreys Men’s Soccer and Volleyball programs were both in action Saturday October 2nd. Men’s Soccer was at home hosting Southwestern Community College. Two first half goals from Race Rome set the stage for a 3-1 second half and a 5-1 Victory on the day to remain unbeaten on the season. Volleyball was on the road against Linn-Benton Community College and fought hard in all 3 sets but ultimately fell 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 19-25).

Men’s Soccer:
The Ospreys (6-0-2, 4-0-2) were without 9 players and their assistant coach due to COVID19 protocols when they hosted Southwestern (1-6-1, 0-5-1) and their depth proved why they opened the NWAC rankings in 4th place. Race Rome got the Ospreys started in the 13th minute when Randy Rodriguez would play a ball that somehow crossed the entire middle where Rome drove it home. In the 33rd minute Rome would collect the ball outside the box and drive it under a diving keeper into the right corner to put the Ospreys up 2-0 going into the half.

Southwestern would come out and Toby Balaam hit a great ball that snuck through 3 defenders and past the keeper to bring the score to 2-1. Just minutes later in the 49th Julian Jackson would collect a ball bouncing out of the scrum and drive it into the upper right corner to go up 3-1. In the 68th Jose Gallegos played a ball to Rodriguez who made a shift move at the top of the box and drove the ball home. And in the 75th Zach Olson would set up Jhoel Sarraude who would get his 14th of the season and secure the 5-1 victory.

There was one yellow card issued in the match: Zach Olson (63’)

Volleyball:
The Ospreys (13-5, 5-2) entered the first NWAC coaches poll as the #4 ranked team but they faced a tall task in the #1 ranked team Linn Benton (17-2, 7-0) on Saturday. Although they played competitive sets and fought for each point they ultimately fell short in each set and dropped the match 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 19-25).

Volleyball will be at home for their next match Wednesday October 6th at 6:30pm. They are hosting Umpqua Community College (4-10, 0-5). Men’s Soccer will be on the road next Saturday October 9th taking on Lane Community College (1-5-2, 1-3-2) at 12:00pm.
